In the 41st millennium mutation is very common and extreme, with many of those afflicted being only barely recognisable as human. These unfortunates are universally shunned, cast out of their homes or killed by zealous townsfolk. In the Underhive, the situation is no better and mutants are enslaved, killed and ostracised without pity.

Although their bodies may be altered, these outcasts are still human underneath it all and so resentment and bitterness festers. Out in the wastes they group together for protection, their deformity and hatred giving them common cause, but for many simply to survive is not enough. They want to strike back at their oppressors, the hated normals and so they raid and slaughter out of spite, tearing down remote settlements, razing Redemptionist temples to the ground, putting Guilder caravans to the sword and generally spreading anarchy and pain. It is fortunate for everybody that these psychotic freaks are ill disciplined and poorly organised.

All this could change, however, as there has emerged in recent years an organisation calling itself the Army of the Second Circle, after the circle of hell which Redemptionist doctrine reserves for mutants. This organisation has been coordinating the disorganised rabble that makes up its membership, trying to tap their terrifying potential. Normals can but pray that they do not succeed.
